19 July 2008 - Manchester Saints Broncos: 6 Cartmel Valley Broncos 15
So Cartmel remain undefeated for the season, with seven wins out of seven, and secured the NW League Championship with this result. The game followed a familiar pattern, with CV hitting strongly from the start, scoring 5 in the first, third and fifth innings, and then restricting the Manchester batting with excellent pitching. Highlights were two three-run home runs from Tom, 5 strike outs in two closing innings by Ryan, and a base hit in his first ever at-bat by Kyle, leading to his first ever run. Base running was excellent, apart from an over ambitious attempt to steal home by Ryan in the first inning. MVP was shared between Tom & Kyle. Dave Hill
28 June 2008 - Cartmel Valley Broncos 16: Runcorn Jets Broncos 11
There was some confusion from the start as to who the home team were for this game, as it was originally scheduled to be played at Runcorn. The two teams had however already played a league match at Runcorn, so it was rearranged at Cartmel, and after discussion between the coaches it was decided that Cartmel would bat last as the home team. They started off well by scoring 5 in the bottom of the first inning, with Jonny Hill hitting a three run homer, and then scoring 4 in the 3rd with Tom doing exactly the same. There were five run innings from Cartmel again in the 4th and Runcorn in the 5th, but CV held on, Ryan striking out 2 in the top of the 6th to close out the win. Other notable events included two three-base hits by Ryan, Tom getting himself out by bunting foul for a 3rd strike, and Michael hitting into a double play by popping up to the Runcorn 3rd base man who then stood on the base before Isaac could tag back. So Cartmel clinched their place in the Final Four with this win, achieved as usual by excellent hitting all through the line up, and quality pitching. Dave Hill
28 June 2008 - Cartmel Valley Rookies v Runcorn Jets Rookies (Double Header)
Cartmel had 12 keen players and lent 3 (Coby, Emily & Mathew) to Runcorn to make up team numbers.
Game 1 - Cartmel Valley Rookies 24: Runcorn Jets Rookies 5
Cartmel started strongly with 7 runs in the 1st inning, followed by 8 in the second and 9 in the third. Good batting was backed by good fielding by all players. Zeno scored a home run and Max scored 2 home runs. Emily (playing for Runcorn) scored 2 of Runcorn's 5 runs.
Game 2 - Cartmel Valley Rookies 25: Runcorn Jets Rookies 9
Runcorn started more strongly in the second game, scoring 4 runs in the first inning, though had a poor second only scoring 1 and 4 in the final inning. Cartmel were consistant scoring 8, 8, 9 with two good catches by Luke, though Coby (playing for Runcorn) caught Tyler out! Tyler made up for it in the final inning scoring a home run and Max had a triple in home runs. Lyn Prescott
21 June 2008 - Cartmel Valley Broncos 11: Manchester Saints Broncos 6
A dismal day for baseball at Allen Fields with continuous drizzle, but we played anyway, and it resulted in Cartmel's best game of the season. The first three innings were close, with both teams batting strongly and driving in 6 runs, but then Cartmel broke open the game in the top of the 4th, scoring 5 runs with no outs. From then on the pitchers dominated, with Ryan striking out 7 batters for no runs and only one hit in the last three innings. Batting for Manchester Niall was 2 for 3 with a double and a triple, while for Cartmel Jonny Hill continued his hitting streak, going 3 for 3 on the day and 9 for 10 for the season. An excellent day's work from the whole team, keeping Cartmel firmly at the top of the league with 5 wins from 5 games. Dave Hill
21 June 2008 - Cartmel Valley Rookies 24: Manchester Saints Rookies 4
10 players travelled to play at Manchester (in the pouring rain) and all players had a great game. Manchester was short of players so Ross B played catcher for them. After a first inning scoring 6 runs (all except the last 3 batters), the next two innings scored a full 9 runs each. Cameron scored a home run and Max (as last batter) scored 2 home runs. There was some great fielding from all players, plus Murray caught one batter out and Luke's magic glove (as pitcher) caught 5 batters out. Lyn Prescott
15 June 2008 - Frank Caunce Tournament/President's Day at Cartmel
The
day started rather damply but fortunately held off during Opening Ceremony, the National Anthem and the First Pitch by the Club President, Sam Naylor. The
rain returned soaking the players (and spectators) during the
first games, but brilliant sunshine later
on in the day dried everyone out. A great turnout with teams from Bolton, Cartmel, Glasgow, Halton, Manchester, Menwith Hill and Runcorn competing in the
Rookie, Bronco and Pony Games. Final winners were Cartmel in Pony,
Manchester in Bronco and Cartmel in Rookie.
Cartmel Valley Broncos
With five Broncos teams entered, arranging the competition to produce an overall winner would seem to be difficult. However, it was generally accepted that Bolton Bears as the newest team were likely to be the weakest. So it was decided to hold two semi-finals, with the loser of each game playing Bolton, and the winners playing for the trophy. Thus each team would play two games and a winner could be found in a days play. Games were to be over three innings or an hour's duration. The semi final ties were drawn as Runcorn v Halton followed by Cartmel v Manchester. Halton beat Runcorn, then CV were narrowly beaten by Manchester in a game terminated after an hour with the score 6-4. Cartmel, still batting in the top of the 3rd inning, were far from being down & out with Jonny Hill left on 2nd base and Tom, potentially the tying run, already at the plate. So who knows what the result would have been if played to a finish. After lunch, Cartmel then had to play Bolton but the Bears would not go down as easily as suggested by the 27-1 scoreline between the two teams earlier in the season. Indeed Bolton generally looked much more of a team than previously, with smart new orange uniforms, and started strongly with 5 runs in the top of the first. Cartmel matched them with 5 in the bottom of the 1st and Jon S was only prevented from registering a grand slam by the fact that the 5th run ran in ahead of him. From then on however experience told with BB only getting one more run to Cartmel's 3 in the 2nd and going down in order in the 3rd to finish the game, Sam acting as closer. Cartmel 8 Bolton 6. Manchester then beat Halton in a tense final, coming from behind to win it by a single run in the bottom of the 3rd. Meanwhile Cartmel & Runcorn played out time with a friendly game on the T Ball diamond which finished as a 9-9 draw, with coach Jeff Z taking advantage of the opportunity to give experience to some of the younger Bronco bench players. Dave Hill
Cartmel Valley Rookies had 13 keen players participating on the day, so the coach had to swop players between innings to allow everyone to play. Cory took care of the bats - just wait until he can play next year!
Game One - Cartmel Valley Rookies 15: Halton Polecats Rookies 8
Cartmel started strongly and continued with strong batting and fielding to dominate the game. In every Inning Cartmel scored 2 or 3 more runs than Halton. Of particular mention was Murray who caught 3 batters out and Luke who caught one batter out. Home runs were scored by Murray, Cameron and Zeno. Lyn Prescott
Game Two - Cartmel Valley Rookies 20: East Lancs Rookies 12
Manchester and Runcorn combined to form the East Lancs team for this game and also 'borrowed' a Cartmel player (Tyler) when one of their players received an injury and had to drop out - a truly North Western side! Cartmel again dominated with 6 or 7 runs scored in each inning. Luke caught 2 batters out and Paul caught 1 batter out. Cameron scored a home run and Max (as last batter) scored two home runs. Lyn Prescott
7 June 2008 - Ponies Double Header at Menwith Hill
Game One - Cartmel Valley Ponies 20: Menwith Hill Jammers 5
The highlight of game one was Ben’s hitting, which included 3 doubles and a home run. Good solid hitting right through the team made it easy for the pitching staff to keep the lead all the way through the game. Every one on the team had a multi hit game which is a good sign of depth at every position. Cartmel scored 5,4,4,2,3,2 in the 6 inning game and gave up only 5 runs . The 2 pitchers used were Dane who pitched 3 innings and gave up 4 runs striking out 2 batters and was also involved in a 1-4-3 double play Dane to Dale to Zak on first. And Ben who pitched 3 innings striking out 6 batters and giving up 1 run. So it was a very solid first game.
Game Two Cartmel Valley Ponies 27: Menwith Hill Jammers 4
The second game of the double header started much the same as the first the first, 5 batters all taking bases the first out coming at Aaron who still collected an rbi for his ground out. Hitting highlights were another monster home run from Ben (it’s a good habit to have Ben keep it up!!) again all players took multi hit games home with them, and made the job of the pitchers easier than was expected. We had 3 pitchers featuring in game 2 first up was Seb pitching 3 innings who gave up 3 runs and struck out 4 batters. In a solid outing. Seb also had help with the teams' 2nd double play of the day, a 6-4-3 classic from Ben to Dane to Zak on first. Next to the hill was Dane who pitched 2 innings giving up 1 run and striking out 3 batters, the pitching was finished by Ben who gave up 0 runs and struck out 2 batters. The game ending on a dropped third strike put out first. Cartmel scored 5,5,5,5,4,3 in the 6 innings
To sum up the day it was a very good day for both batting and pitching as well as excellent fielding, every hit by Menwith was fielded well with only a few errors on the day. It’s not every day you see throws from third (Seb) hit the first baseman’s glove still travelling, at this level, also the team's awareness to try to turn 2 was a great thing to watch let’s hope the standard continues, who knows we may even pull off a triple play next week now there’s a challenge for you boys!! Bob Carney
17 May 2008 at Halton - Cartmel Valley Rookies 16: Halton Polecats Rookies 12
Cartmel
had a close run game with Halton, at the end of the first inning Cartmel led
7:4, but Halton pulled it back in the second, scoring 6 runs to Cartmel's 5.
In the final inning both teams had some great fielding, but Cartmel maintained
their lead and finished 4 runs in the lead, totalling 16 to Halton's 12.
Of special mention, Ross D had a great home run in the second inning, MVP was
Luke, and PP was shared between Elliot, Luke and Max. Lyn Prescott
3 May 2008 at Bolton - Cartmel Valley Broncos 27: Bolton Bears Broncos 1
Cartmel consolidated their position on top of the Broncos NW League with this disappointingly one sided encounter with Bolton, for whom it was only the second game in the league structure. Bolton only had seven players available, so two Cumbrian players (Michael and James) volunteered to make up the numbers for them. For the second week running Cartmel started with a five run first inning, and dominated the game from then on, with the 3rd & 4th innings also being terminated after five runs. At the start of the 4th inning Tom, Ryan, Chantelle and Dale hit 4 doubles in succession, and only just missed a fifth when Connor was tagged out at second trying to stretch a good single base hit a base too far. In order to allow the Pony game to start early, it was then decided to make the Broncos game five innings only. Cartmel proceeded to score 10 runs in the open 5th inning including a grand slam HR by Ryan, before Dale struck out swinging to end the hitting spree, and Ryan fulfilled his usual role as closing pitcher with three K’s to end the game. Other highlights included the first double play of the season, with Dale catching a pop up and then getting the ball to Tom on first to force out the base runner, and Bolton’s only run, scored by Michael, who was almost put out in a close play at home plate. So Cartmel can be well content with the season so far, however they should not be complacent as Manchester & Runcorn will hopefully provide a greater test of their abilities in the coming weeks. Dave Hill
26 April 2008 at Cartmel - Halton Broncos 6: Cartmel Valley Broncos 11
In the first game of the season Cartmel never looked in any danger of losing, with excellent pitching, good hitting, and one outstanding example of fielding brilliance. In the first inning Halton’s leadoff hitter got on base, but the advantage quickly swung in favour of the home team as Dale struck out the next three hitters in succession. Cartmel proceeded to put nine out of ten hitters on base in the bottom of the first, scoring five runs and were only prevented from further scores by its being a closed inning. From then on the story of the game was solid pitching from four Cartmel pitchers dominating over some wobbly Halton batting. Dale, Tom, Jonathan S and Ryan collectively struck out sixteen batters out of a possible eighteen in a six inning game. The only exception was in the fifth inning, where Halton were looking to take advantage of some wayward pitches from Jonathan S. They scored three runs from two singles, three walks and a hit batter, but then Cartmel were rescued by an incredible diving catch to end the inning by Tom, now fielding at first base. After the spectacular first inning Cartmel’s batting continued to be solid throughout, scoring two runs in each of the 2nd, 3rd and 5th innings, and generally all players can consider themselves pleased with a good team performance. Dave Hill.
